In the Responsible AI by Design Framework, Visibility, Transparency, and Explainability counteracts this secrecy by demanding that AI processes, data usage, and outcomes remain open to scrutiny. As trust is foundational for AI adoption, organizations adhering to this principle make it a priority to communicate how and why their AI models arrive at certain conclusions.

Visibility involves making the entire AI pipeline visible—covering data sources, preprocessing steps, model architectures, and performance metrics. Transparency extends to sharing this information with stakeholders in a comprehensible way. Meanwhile, Explainability focuses on revealing how models process inputs and assign outputs, going beyond mere metrics to clarify the rationale behind AI-driven decisions. Such explainability might involve describing the major factors that led to a recommendation or the logic behind certain classifications. When done properly, it reduces confusion, fosters public trust, and provides crucial insight for compliance reviews or user feedback loops.
